Private Label & OEM
OEM vs ODM vs Private Label: Which Manufacturing Model Fits Your Business?
Senyue Editorial Team · Published · Updated · 3 min read
When sourcing OEM ODM adult products, the model you choose decides how much you control, how much you invest and how quickly you reach the market. In short: private label applies your brand to an existing product, ODM adapts a manufacturer's existing design to your needs, and OEM builds a product to your own specification. Each suits a different stage of business growth.
These terms are often used loosely, so always confirm in writing what a supplier means by them. Below we define each model, compare them side by side and explain how to choose.
What is private label?
Private label (sometimes called white label) means selecting a proven product from the manufacturer's catalog and selling it under your brand. Customisation is usually limited to logo, colour and packaging.
- Best for: first-time brands, distributors testing a market, fast launches.
- Strengths: lowest investment, shortest lead time, proven product quality.
- Limits: competitors may sell similar base products; less differentiation.
What is ODM (Original Design Manufacturing)?
In ODM, the manufacturer owns an existing design and modifies it for you — new shape details, textures, colours, functions or control modes. You get a more distinctive product without funding development from zero.
- Best for: growing brands wanting differentiation with controlled risk.
- Strengths: balance of uniqueness, cost and speed.
- Limits: base design IP usually stays with the manufacturer; check exclusivity terms.
What is OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing)?
In OEM, you bring your own design or detailed specification and the factory engineers and produces it. This can involve new moulds, electronics and testing.
- Best for: established brands with a clear product vision and budget.
- Strengths: maximum differentiation and ownership of your design.
- Limits: highest upfront cost (tooling), longest timeline, higher MOQs.

How to choose the right model
1. Start with your budget and cash flow
If capital is limited, private label lets you validate demand before investing in tooling. Many brands begin with private label and graduate to ODM or OEM once they know what sells.
2. Consider your timeline
Launching for a specific season or trade show? Private label or light ODM is usually the only realistic option. Full OEM development needs time for prototyping, testing and revisions.
3. Decide how important uniqueness is
If you sell on crowded marketplaces, differentiation matters. ODM changes such as exclusive colours, textures or functions can make a meaningful difference without the full cost of OEM.
4. Clarify intellectual property
Agree in writing who owns designs, moulds and artwork, and whether the product is exclusive to you in certain markets. Clear contracts prevent disputes later.
Questions to ask any manufacturer
- Which of my requested changes count as private label, ODM or OEM?
- Are tooling or mould costs one-off, and who owns the moulds?
- What are the MOQs per SKU and per colour for each option?
- How many sample rounds are included?
- Which certifications and test documents apply to the final product?
Materials are another key decision in any model — see our guide to medical-grade silicone to understand what to specify.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between OEM and ODM?
With OEM the product is built to your own design or specification. With ODM the manufacturer's existing design is modified for you.
Is private label the same as white label?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Both mean selling a manufacturer's existing product under your own brand, with limited customisation.
Which model has the lowest MOQ?
Private label usually has the lowest minimum order quantities because no new tooling or development is required.
Who owns the design in an OEM project?
Usually the buyer, but ownership of designs and moulds must be stated clearly in the contract.
Can I switch from private label to OEM later?
Yes. Many brands start with private label to validate demand, then invest in ODM or OEM products once sales data supports it.
